Udon Thani is one of the main cities of Northeast Thailand and the latter's Isan plateau. It grew during the Vietnam war, and is primarily focused on agriculture and trade.

The region's outlying villages and rice paddies have maintained a traditional pace of life, largely unaffected by the industrialization and modernization elsewhere in the country.
