Sydney is the capital of the Australian state of New South Wales, home to over 4 million people, it is the most populus Australian city. Sydney stepped into world prominence after being declared the host of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games, and is the home for the globally recognized landmark, the Sydney Opera House. Sydney has nicknames which include 'The Harbour City', 'Sin City' and the 'City of Lights'.
Sydney is located on the coast, and is well known for is picturesque beaches and coastal cliffs. Sydney's most popular beaches include, Bondi and Coogee located in the cities Eastern suburbs. Manly and Palm Beach located in North Sydney. Beaches in the Northern suburbs of the city are popular for surfing due to the smaller crowds, and better waves. Notably Freshwater, and Curl Curl beach are surfing hotspots.
Citizens of Sydney are known as Sydneysiders.
